This week I started work on the English subtitles for the film "Ordinary Life" by Taizo Yoshida.
A wonderful team of Imagine students, and friends, and friends of friends - 13 people in total - have translated the film from Japanese into English.
Now I have 13 pieces to put together, and this week I am doing a first edit and trying to make it one, same style piece.
First, just grammar and spelling, basic English corrections. Next, we will do the style and screen time edit.
I'm doing the edit with a friend CA Edington, another English teacher in Sapporo.
Everyone is giving their skills and time for free as the film is a small project. Yoshida-san hopes to arrange showings in America this summer. We hope that our translation work will give the film a wider audience.
The translators had some interesting problems: Fukushima dialect or words, how to translate Japanese words such as "kotatsu" and place names.
I saw the film in March and I think I understood about 60%...now the film is emerging into English.
A BIG thankyou to all the translators! I hope we will arrange a showing at a later date, so you can see the results of your work.
Meanwhile...I have 27 pages of subtitles to edit....
