Not just regular sushi rolls, anyone can wrap veggies and fish in seaweed. No, the amazing picture or decoration sushi rolls. That's what I wanted to try!
Recently a Love Hokkaido Rice advertising campaign on the Sapporo subway trains featured deco maki and it reminded me of this wish. And last year I helped a translator with deco-making instructions for a Singapore group. So, when NHK Culture School in Shin-Sapporo offered an afternoon class in this skill I was so happy. Finally, it was MY chance.
Last week I joined the class and learned how to make little oni/demon faces for the Setsubun Festival.
It was hard. My shoulders ached with all the concentration. Cutting egg and seaweed, Measuring rice carefully, arranging it all, rolling the different parts.....it took 90 minutes!
But LOOK what I learned to make! Maybe I can't make this at home on my own again. But it was so interesting and fun.
