This morning I joined 700 volunteers downtown to staff the Fighters Victory Parade route. It was cold and wet and windy - but we kept on smiling.
Some fans were waiting since 6 am!
Volunteers gathered at Sapporo City office at 7.30 am and we got bibs, gloves, chemical heat pads and trash bags - then we set out in groups of 30 to pre-decided spots with volunteer leaders.
My spot was south of Parco, on the main street. The main job was to move the barriers into place, then chat to the fans and keep them entertained in the three hours before the parade arrived.
Near me were fans from Obihiro, and others who had handmade signs and handfans. I even met Haru the Fighters support-dog.
When the players cars and bus arrived us volunteers had to crouch down in front of the barriers and hold them - to make sure nothing fell down. But we could quickly look over our shoulders at the players :-)
Then after the parade we had to take away the barriers, pick up trash - and most difficult was to remove the wooden filling to the tram lines so the streetcar could start again.
It WAS cold. But FUN!
