I used to go there many times for lunch or dinner between classes, because owner Kuniko Hayase was a good cook and the cafe was relaxing.
When she told me the cafe was closing I asked about the beautiful garden and heard that EVERYTHING would be destroyed to build a carpark - the house, the garden...everything.
Hayase-san said I and friends could take what we wanted...so Operation Rose Rescue went into action Saturday and Sunday.
This used to be Hayase-san's father's dental clinic and some of the roses are 50 years old....they were huge and needed a LOT of digging to get them out.
English teacher friends Vicky, from Eniwa and Mary, from Sumikawa, came with friends and family and we all worked, and worked and worked....packed it into cars...and then drove home to work, and work and put it all into OUR gardens!
I got two roses, and many spring bulbs AND some patio stones.
I am so sad the garden had to be destroyed, but now more than six gardens in the Sapporo area will try to continue growing Hayase-san's plants.
