Friday was raining, so instead of outside by Doucho - the preparation event was held underground in the walking area. About 100 people gathered and sat on the ground to turn mountains of roses, carnations and nasturtiums into bags of petals.
These were then used to "draw" the sapporo Flower carpet 2016 design on the pavement outside AkaRenga Terrace.
I was on the orange carnation team - we had to gently cut the flower heads and separate the stems and the petals. It was a fun event and I met many different people.
But...I did feel a little sad to be doing this to flowers. Cutting them and ripping them apart...
Today I will hope to go to Odori to see the carpet. It is on show until 4.30 pm and then the whole picture is broken up and the petals will be recycled into garden waste.
